How did “Season of Weddings” originate? What inspirations did you draw on?
I was literally invited to six weddings in 2022, and the one I attended in Rhode Island was so lovely, I had to channel it into writing on the train back (I have stories based on some of the other weddings too.) Some of the emotional thrusts are based on my own experience, but I’ll let you guess which.
What is your writing process like? Did this story fit the pattern?
I was chatting with fellow writer Eugenia Triantafyllou about this once. She says that I’m good at infusing my stories with autobiographical moments. I think I definitely did that here. Also, I happen to write a lot on public transport, so this fits the pattern.
What are you reading lately? What writers inspire you?
I’ve actually been reading Dracula in preparation for a new class I’m teaching this Spring. I’d never read it before and I’m really enjoying it. Carmilla is next on the list! I’m glad I’m finally getting to old classics of the spec fic genre.
Other than writing, do you have any other creative pursuits? What do you do to relax?
I’ve actively been trying to broaden my leisure activities recently! I’ve been swimming and running with a gay triathlon club in NYC, and have been taking rope-bondage classes. It’s been a great way to meet new kinds of people and engage different parts of my brain. I really think that having that kind of balance in life helps me create better art.
What are you working on lately? Where else can fans look for your work?
I’m racing to finish my novella, The Iron Below Remembers, for Neon Hemlock Press, and I’m working on a magic-ish-school tabletop roleplaying game for the National Academy of Sciences! Find me on Bluesky or Instagram to keep up to date on my projects. (Just search for my full name.)
